How do the automatic Google sitemaps work?

This is explained well on the holaservers blog, here and here. Part of the beauty of HolaServers is that all the files appear in a database, so it is easy to detect when a modification takes place. Once an hour, I check for modifications and ping several search engines (Google, Yahoo!, Live, Ask and Moreover) accordingly. For each site, a virtual sitemap.xml exists, like this one. Same story for robots.txt. It seems to be working pretty well, as explained in this FAQ - My site will automatically be indexed in Google, Yahoo! and other search engines?
